Long Buckby & Brington Baptist Church have a website but I added a WordPress.com blog, using the Sequential theme, to display the photographs taken by myself and other church members and visitors.
WordPress is a good way to organise galleries of photographs because of its ability to add categories and tags. For example, we’ve been able to include a link to the Sunday mornings tag: buckbybaptistphotos.wordpress.com/tag/sunday-mornings/ on the main church website so that people who are thinking of coming along to a Sunday service can get an idea of what to expect.
I chose to use WordPress.com, rather than self-hosted WordPress, because much of the church’s work is carried out by volunteers. I can’t be sure that there will always be someone happy to maintain it – for example by updating plugins. In years to come, if I’m no longer a member then the site can be taken over by someone else and it will not disappear due to the hosting having lapsed.
This project does demonstrate one of the limitations of WordPress.com. The main church website, and most of its literature, uses the Roboto font, but this is not available at WordPress.com and I had to choose an alternative. This is the kind of compromise that has to be accepted when deciding to use WordPress.com. [UPDATE: The Roboto font is now available, so I have been able to change to that, but the point about compromises with WordPress.com is still valid, especially if you do not have a Business plan.]
